The objective of this project was to determine the best species of tree for soil conservation planting and economic return. Traditionally soil conservation has focused on using poplars and willows as well as radiata pine for stabilising eroding slopes. However, there is anecdotal evidence that there are much better species available that will not only stabilise soils, but provide a greater economic return.

Workshops with landowners, farm foresters, experts from CRIs and the forest industry, to determine the best species for different soil types and climatic zones where held and a guide was produced: "Trees on Farms, A guide with local experience of growing trees in the Waikato"

Copies of this guide can be downloaded from: http://www.ew.govt.nz/

There is a contact on this page for ordering a hard copy or a request can be sent to Library@ew.govt.nz the cost is $20 per copy.
